The following are some of the incidents of violence against Christians since Christmas 2003. Many others have gone unreported.

Attacked by a group of people.


Dikhethakma Church - December 2003

On 27th of December the Parish Priest has said the Sunday mass at 7.00 a.m. Later on at about 10.00 a.m. a crowded of 40 people have invaded the church and damaged the Church property destroying the statues, furniture , Grotto etc. The PP has informed the police & the estimate of the damage is not yet known.

A Pastor's house was stoned at midnight.

Church attacked. Store shed burned down. Furniture damaged.

A pastor returning home after service was accosted and assaulted.

Church threatened to vacate premises within 3 days. Church withdrawn.

(previously mobbed on 28th Dec 2003). A mob attempted to attack the Church. Police negotiated to prevent attack & sent away the congregation. Services stopped on advice of Police.

Threats by a gang of approximately 25 people to close the Church.

Threats issued by monks to close down the Church. Ultimatum of 7 days.

The pastor was threatened with death by unidentified persons, if he continued the church.

A pastor was threatened with death by a monk.

10th Jan.

Pugoda

Foursquare Gospel Church

A worker received a death threat from a group claiming to be followers of the late Ven. Soma Thero. Letter claimed to carry out the threat after the 3rd month almsgiving of the monk.

Independent prayer centre

Threats that thousands will surround the home, the Courthouse and the Police. Police alerted & agreed to provide protection.

10th Jan.

Thennekumbura

Good News Central Church

A crowd of about 15 persons broke in to the church and set fire to pews. Windows and doors broken. Crowd chased away and fire was put out. Police responded with speed and prevented further damage.

11th Jan.

Matugama

Margaya Fellowship

A group of men arrived on about 10 motorbikes and attacked the church, damaging the building. The pastor and family with 2 children escaped and hid in fear.

About 5,000 persons marched in a demonstration rally to a nearby play ground.

An ultimatum given to the police to guarantee that suspects of the attack on the Catholic Church will not be taken to court on 12th (Mon). Countdown through loudspeakers. Police reportedly agreed not to take any monks to court. (it is learned that one of the suspects is a monk).

The OIC was removed on Friday 9th.

Announcement made of a large rally in Homagama on 25th January attended by prominent monks.

Attack by a mob of about 20 people armed with bicycle chains at midnight. Attempt to cut telephone wire. Police alerted.

Calvary Church

A Pastor was attacked at night with a knife. Sustained injuries to hand.

15th Jan.

Weliweriya, Gampaha Dist.

AoG Church

Christian denied burial at public cemetery. Police informed and a Magistrate's order issued to allow burial. Hundreds of people led by monks prevent entry to cemetery. Large number of Policemen deployed but unable to facilitate entry for burial. Family compelled to bury the diseased in family garden.

Interior of church set on fire. (earlier desecrated on 30th Nov. 2003). Reported on Sirasa & MTV news on 16th Jan.

A trishaw parked in the premises set on fire. Door of Church damaged.

Attempt to burn down church at 12.45 am. Window damaged.

Stones thrown at Church, roof damaged.

Mob threatens Church members meeting at premises belonging to a parishioner.

Church attacked. (reported in press on 19th Jan.)

Foursquare Gospel Church

House of Pastor surrounded by a group dressed in black from 11pm to 4 am, shouting at the inmates. Only the Pastor's wife and 14yr old daughter were at home.

25th Jan.

Mathugama

Kings Revival Church

Four attackers broke in to the Pastor's home at night, tied him up and assaulted him. Police have been informed.

25th Jan.

Bethany Church (Independent)

Church was stoned damaging the building.

26th Jan.

Maththegoda

Catholic Shrine "Church of our Mother most pure"

A mob of about 20 persons attached the Church at night. Sacred statues were smashed and Bibles were set on fire. The mob arrived in vehicles, dressed in black and white. No arrests were made. The Police reportedly claimed it to be the work of drunks. Church authorise say this attack fits the pattern of the organized attacks that have taken place in surrounding areas.
